Words and Power · Course in public speaking, persuasion and negotiation (PDF)
Speaking well, persuading and negotiating are almost always taught separately and almost always needed together. Words and Power is a 48-page written PDF course for anyone who has to speak in meetings, present their work, sell what they do, ask for a salary or discuss a price, and has so far done it by ear. Available in English and Spanish: choose the language before you buy.
What’s included
- 8 modules, 47 lessons and 21 timed exercises, designed to be done with a phone and a notebook.
- Public speaking (3 modules): answering in an orderly way in one minute, what to do with nerves and going blank, building a speech around a single idea, openings and closes, pauses, filler words, rehearsal and hostile questions.
- Persuasion (2 modules): the seven principles of influence and how to spot when they’re being used on you, the effect of giving a reason, framing and anchoring, how to respond to a “no”; and a practical reading of Machiavelli’s The Prince: the power map, the fox and the lion, “feared or loved” read properly, and what you shouldn’t copy.
- Negotiation (3 modules): interests versus positions, your alternative, the three numbers, bargaining chips, who names the first figure, questions and listening, concessions, ten pressure tactics with their answers, negotiating by WhatsApp or email and three guided cases (pay rise, client asking for a discount, rent or supplier).
- 28 scripts: ready-made lines for opening, asking, naming a price, conceding, saying no and closing.
- 8-week plan with a real-world challenge each week and 4 worksheets (speech card, self-assessment rubric, negotiation sheet and field notebook).
- 22 cited sources: Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, Plutarch and Machiavelli, and studies published in Science, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and the Journal of Experimental Psychology, plus the reference books by Fisher and Ury, Cialdini and Voss.
Who it’s for
For employees, freelancers, students and anyone who wants to explain themselves better and negotiate with a method. No previous experience or audience needed.
What it isn’t
It’s a written course, with no videos: you read it, do the exercise and record yourself. It doesn’t promise a pay rise, a sale or any specific result: that depends on your practice and the other party. It doesn’t teach manipulation; it explains pressure tactics so you can recognise them. It doesn’t replace a lawyer or employment adviser in matters with legal consequences.
